What is this thing called science? Think about it. How would you define science?

What we mean by science depends on the context in which we are using the word, and we can roughly categorize science into three semantic groups:

  1. Science facts: A collection of provisional facts about the natural world that have been established through the scientific method.
  2. The scientific method: A sequence of formal steps that allows us to establish a possible cause for an observed effect.
  3. Scientific institutions: Universities, research centres, scientific organizations, journals, et cetera.

Sometimes a fourth category is added, scientific spirituality or what Einstein called cosmic religiosity. It is a feeling of awe experienced when faced with a natural phenomenon.

Let us have a look at these categories in detail.
